Martin Whatson is a Norwegian street artist who is best known for his calligraphic scribbles in shades of gray. Growing up in Oslo, Martin was an active part of the new graffiti scene in the early 90's, which at the time maintained zero tolerance.
The city's physical architecture was a constant inspiration, deepening and destruction of every generation that contributed to the urban infrastructure. Evolution moved him closer to a simple but effective aesthetic, which he believed could bridge the passion and spontaneity that graffiti held for him. With as many works on walls as on canvas and paper, the relationship between vulnerability and strength remains constant in each work.
His works can be seen to reflect the rise and fall of the streets, as he symbolically recreates the urban environment, and then vandalizes it to reveal his lively transformations. The ash tones in the compositions and the beautiful background are reminiscent of his alternative canvases, the concrete. True to form, no gray space remains gray for long in Martin's presence.
Martin works with festivals, projects and not least walls globally. His original work can be found in private collections and in institutions with solo exhibitions featured in cities from Tokyo to LA, London to New York.
The exhibition will consist of works on paper, cardboard and canvas.
